Beautiful job. Love all of your ideas in utilizing every available space (that's thinking outside the box). Also the workmanship is outstanding. I used to be a helper for a carpenter and we would build and install cabintry on site, the only way to go in my opinion. That is a lot of hard work you've done and the result is priceless. Now at the age of 77 I could only imagine doing something like this. lol. God Bless and thanks for sharing.
@@rbilardo47 - Thank you and thanks for watching. I agree with you that cabinets and woodwork should be custom made. I know someone who just remodeled a 1.5 million dollar house and the kitchen cabinets came from IKEA. What???
Wish we had known you were in St Augustine. We would have love to have seen you two. Maybe on your way back. Looking forward to following your trip to Oklahoma. I didn’t even know that could be done. Let us know if you have any questions on our Tenn Tom, Mississippi or Ohio Rivers. I’m afraid going upstream on the Mississippi is going to be a slow process.
@@sharonoliver5284 - Hi ! It’s been awhile. It would be great to see you guys again! We’re not sure if Oklahoma can be done either. 😂 But we are going to try!
So been almost binge watching last 3 or 4 episodes while the pork butt on my smoker was finishing to see the solar array you left Tampa early to get. Did the deal fall through or we got another video coming soon?
@@johnmarschalk1977 - We did get the solar array we left early to get. However, we weren’t ready to install it as we had no where to mount it. So first we had to prepare Elixir. In the more recent videos you may have noticed us tearing up the wood on the mid deck. That is to begin the installation of the frame to mount the solar panels. They are installed at this point and you will see Elixir morph as the videos progress. Thank you for watching!!

Looking at Tulsa and all I see is a commercial basin, I don't see any anchorages let alone marinas! I wonder how long they will let you stay at the Rogers Landing Park dock? Three Forks Harbor is over 40 mile away as the crow's fly. We plan on making it there to visit our folks in Rogers Ark...

Also curious as to where you practiced law? Wife paralegal/legal secretary in Augusta. Don't know if I should have said that, since you would be able to find out firm based on name that going to show up on this comment. 😮
Should have taken pictures of boat registration # on their hull and then a picture of the dock the next morning and sent it to FL DNR. In their defense on the shrimping, not sure what day of week it was, but that may be one of the few days they get to go and that's the only spot they know. They did look like they've done it a few times with the setup they had. I've shrimped in SC w a buddy where you can bait, so never near a dock or boat or home. Still unacceptable and they should be reported.
@@johnmarschalk1977 - that would have been a wise thing to do. Too bad I didn’t think of it. But I’ll be prepared if it ever happens again. Thanks!
Water level indicator. Stage of the canal. Some of those locks are just open because water on both sides the same.
@@johnmarschalk1977 - I kinda thought that but wasn’t sure. Thanks !!
@@CruisingThisOldBoat well just put that out. Don't know for sure. Okeechobee is shallow so I'm sure they monitor pool levels. Fish the Ogeechee up stream from tidal and you can check online the levels. Don't go if it's high
Why Tulsa?
@@peterinsyracuse7056 - because we are insane? Due to mechanical problems with Elixir combined with family commitments, it would have been too late in the year to start the loop. So we looked for somewhere to hide from hurricane season and preferably somewhere we haven’t been so that it would be interesting for our viewers. That got us looking at the river system. We have family in Oklahoma so we went hmmm. And sure enough, it looks like we can get there. Although we are not 100% certain. We hope something out of the ordinary will be exciting for us and our viewers. Tulsa is as far as the navigable river goes so that’s how we settled on Tulsa.
Looking forward to the Tulsa journey
@@joshporter6202 - it is an exciting adventure but we also know there will be parts that make us nervous ! We are currently making our way towards the Arkansas River which will take us to Tulsa. But first: the Tenn Tom, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers.
Yea I’m excited for those to. Tulsa is just so much closer to me. And I have thought that it would be a neat trip as the port of Catoosa so many don’t know about.
@@joshporter6202 - you are correct but we are not sure if there is anywhere to stop in the Port of Catoosa. Do you have any intel on that? Otherwise we will just be running up there and then turning right back around and returning to the Kerr Reservoir.
@@CruisingThisOldBoatI wish I did know more. But from my understanding it’s mostly a barge shipping port. I don’t know anything more about it though.
@@joshporter6202 - that makes two of us. 😂 Guess we will just go find out ! Do you keep your boat on the Arkansas River?
At least you’ll be with the current on the Mississippi. Don’t know where you are on your trip as I write this, but there are 2 30-day lock closures on the Tenn-Tom early Sept to early October (Aberdeen and Stennis). Carry some Jerry cans too, fuel and marinas get scarce south of Cairo on the Mississippi. I’m currently in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, crewing with a friend. Left Quebec 20 days ago. I’ll be watching the journey.

Nice time Family week 👍
Definitely! It’s always nice to have family along and the gardens were spectacular!
He wants to know why you keep calling him Gilligan 😅😂😅
😂😂
Just watched this episode for the first time. I had the chuckle because i had the same problem on my DeFever 40, drove me crazy to always have a wet center bilge. Did the same "upgrade" you did several years ago by creating a foward, middle and rear sump areas for the bilge pumps. Still a mystery how the water gets in, but at least the bilge is dry! Nice work!
Thanks - I still think the best way to make the bilge drier is to cut a 3” deep well just big enough to put the bilge pump into. Then it would drain everything in the bilge except for the 2.5 inches in that well. But I’m afraid to cut a whole in the bottom of the boat. I’m not sure how wide the keel is at that point.
BTW. - I wouldn’t mind some pics of your setup if it is keeping things dry - mine improved the problem but did not solve it
Save money buy M. acid mix with water and save lots of money.
Interesting - I’ll have to try that
We are heading to summer in Jacksonville
Great place to hang out !
Why not use a roller?
No reason you couldn’t. 😁
low 90s for the next week here at St Augustine, I go on a mooring ball this weekend........hope it's not too hot where you are at, stay cool
We are also in the low 90’s. We have a/c right now because we pulled in to a marina to access West Marine. Hoping to have our solar panels up and running today. We pull out tomorrow so then we will start feeling the heat 😉
@@CruisingThisOldBoat I bought a 3600 watt, 30 amp generator with an RV plug, and an adapter plug to my shore power cable, that was less than 500 bucks and waiting for a 500 watt wind generator, solar was too costly for 500 watts, my 9 amp 10,000 btu air cools off the main cabin really good. I still need to order a bigger water tank
@@krautAmerican - looks like you plan to live in comfort 😉 I just got my 1200 watt solar array working - can’t wait till tomorrow to see what sun does to it 😁
Hey Ron, love your videos and as I've mentioned, my wife and I are planning to copy-cat you by moving aboard our 45 year old DeFever 40 and living the trawler life in the Caribbean. Would really enjoy a video on your monthly spend and budget if you would be comfortable sharing. Would also like to know how often you're at anchor or marinas. Super glad the bees helped the RA.
We actually have been tracking our expenses since we began our current trip on March 2 so we should be able to put out something soon. We anchor out way more often than we stay at marinas to keep our costs down. In a 5 month period in spring of 2023 we only stayed in a marina twice. Once for 3 days to check in at Bimini and the second time for 2 weeks at the same marina in Bimini because we broke down and then had to wait for a weather window. But we do take full advantage of free docks! When are you planning to begin your trip ?
Our plan is to leave Tampa in two years or less. The major hurdle is preparing the boat as she needs some high $$ items included a new Phasor generator, AC replacement, new tender like yours, watermaker, and dripless shaft seals. Around $25k to $30k worth of upgrades. Our plan is to cruise to each country and stay the length of our visa, then move to another country. Right now my plan is to budget $1,500/mo for either fuel or marina fees. Knowing if that's reasonable, as we'll be on a budget, and the rest of your expenses would be invaluable. My boat is the previous generation of the 40 Defever to yours and has twin Lehman's burning 5 gallons/hr at 8+ knots.
You and Marie have been a real inspiration to us and helped us make the decision to follow in your footsteps.
@@JohnDoe-gj8pm - I’ll try to put something together for you in the next few days showing what we have spent so far on this trip.
